Registration Certificate Applications (EEA1)

This is a blue card that is issued to the EEA nationals who exercise their treaty rights in one of the following ways and make their applications to obtain one:

  • By working in the UK in employment [All EEA nationals except A2 nationals]
  • By completing 12 months of employment under WRS [All A2 nationals]
  • By being self employed
  • By being self sufficient and maintaining comprehensive sickness insurance
  • By studying in the UK and maintaining comprehensive sickness insurance

Although there is no need for the EEA nationals to obtain a registration certificate, as it only confirms their pre-existing rights to reside and work in the UK, it is important for their non-EEA national family member who derives his / her rights from the EEA national.

Nationals of all the EEA states (except A2 nationals, i.e. those from Romania and Bulgaria) can make their applications for registration cards. It is not necessary to have full time employment in order to qualify for a registration certificate, even part-time employment renders an EEA national eligible to apply.

The EEA nationals who have remained in the UK while exercising their treaty rights may make an application for permanent residence provided they have continuously met all the requirements of the registration certificate for five years.

Having a registration card also enables them to invite their fiancé s to come to the UK on fiancé visa [under the immigration rules] for the marriage and later make an in-country application for residence card.

The EEA regulations may appear straight forward and simple but even a small mistake / omission may result in refusal or rejection of the application or dismissal of the appeal / judicial review claim, resulting in making it even more complex. It is therefore strongly advised to take professional representation and leave this matter in our capable hands.
